As someone who worked the Anime/Gaming convention circuit for a decade I became very familiar with Foam Brain Games. I used to swing by their booth at every con they were at to say hello to familiar faces (and buy dice). Now I no longer see them at cons, but I avidly follow their social media and Kickstarter to keep up to date.

They’ve had a lot of exciting projects in the past, and they just delivered on a particularly memorable one — Lost Tome of Monsters. This project created bagged mystery encounters and I really wish I splurged and ordered a complete set.

This adventurer choose to sleep in the wrong abandoned tower…

If you are curious about the mini in the middle, check out my two Hero Forge Reviews, one on look and one on quality.

Each bag consists of a well made monster pin which, due to a hinged base, is usable as a standard D&D mini. It also comes with a solid custom D20 and encounter card. I ordered one mystery pack and two of the special stretch goals — the Gelatinous Cube and Black Dragon.

I wish I had gotten the full mystery set, but seeing as how I primarily run Sci-Fi themed games in other systems I sadly couldn’t justify it. My mystery pack was a grey ooze. Though it’s not one of the more memorable monsters, the pin and die are high quality and the encounter suggestions ensure you are not disappointed.

The gelatinous cube lives up to my expectations, being a large sized (2x2 inch base equivalent) monster with a well thought out encounter. The Black Dragon is also well thought out, though I kind of wish it was larger than 2x2. I’m certainly not disappointed by it, I’m just biased and like large dragons.

I recommend buying a few packs to any GM who found their way to this post! It’ll inevitably come in handy when your players decide to throw a wrench into your carefully planned adventure. You can purchase them online through the Foam Brain Games webstore.

And apparently I forgot to buy the special Mimic! I should fix that…
