Moonshot Baseball June Tournament After Action Report

For those of you who missed my previous article, I have recently dived into the world of Moonshot Baseball. This is a blockchain based, fantasy baseball game which offers daily contests based on actual MLB games as well as simulated tournaments. It’s really inexpensive and easy to start playing and I strongly recommend it.

For those of you who haven’t missed my previous articles you’ll recognize I just copy / pasted that intro! I had thought I’d have more time to post but the next tournament starts Monday! I want to get my June after action report published before that.

June Tournament Announcement

This tournament announcement was particularly deadly for me as it resulted in a multiple project long chain of NFT purchases starting with Hockey Pixel Buddy. If you want that could be the topic for another article (though it WILL have an impact on the next tournament).

For this tournament I had plenty of baseballers to choose from, especially once I went all in on pitchers. That being said, I still appreciate how Melverk, the game commissioner, once again airdropped additional baseballers to people. This meant my team was drastically different than last tournament, only two hitters and my pitchers remaining the same.

My strategy was simple, high discipline is good. I front loaded my lineup with 9 discipline batters to maximize my chance at hitting. I used my highest discipline batters to fill the remaining slots, using home runs as a tie breaker.

My first game in the seeding bracket was against HOOT HOOT. HOOT HOOT is the person who actually introduced me to Moonshot Baseball so I wasn’t surprised when I lost to him. I simply wrote it off as he’s been there longer and had a better team.

That was my biggest mistake this tournament. Yes, he was there longer, and he won so presumably had a better team, BUT all the signs of what I was doing wrong were already there.

  • I couldn’t get people home
  • I was having pitching errors

If I’d paid attention instead of writing it off perhaps the final results would have been different. That’s a question for the next tournament though.

As with the previous tournament, there was a week of seeding games before the actual tournament began. Above is the final standings used to seed the brackets. I was a solid third in my division, 6 runs ahead of 4th place. Once again I had earned a place in the finals bracket.

If you want a seeding montage, my remaining 4 games are shown below. I won the rest of them.

After all my seeding games I did tweak my team a little bit. I received another 5 (out of 6) discipline pitcher so I added them in. I also adjusted my order to ensure my best discipline batters went the most. I doubled down on my initial strategy.

Starting Team for the Finals Bracket.

In the first game my pitching definitely had an off day, giving away bases and runs. Overall my batters carries the game by smashing several home runs.

I had successfully made it to the second round of the finals! I wasn’t overly confident based on how close the last game way, but I made some minor tweaks to my team and was ready! I’d gotten another 9 discipline batter to add to my lineup and shifted to try and get my home run hitters up a little more.

Unfortunately these changes weren’t enough.

In the first inning my pitcher literally dropped the ball — two errors and a home run. My batting was pretty much shut down in the second inning. I managed to catch up in the third, but my relief pitcher quickly gave up a walk off home run. This was when I finally realized that neglecting my fielding stat was a big mistake.

Partial Screenshot of the NEW Farm system

There is one additional variable which may have impacted the results, but its unlikely. This tournament had the addition of a “Farm System” where having 9 players from the same team assigned to the minors would give you a bonus. I did not have any full teams, and even if my opponent did it would be a 1 point stat difference. Its a nice edge when all else is equal, but its unlikely to be a make or break factor.

Final Results

For those who want to know how the tournament ended the Judged claimed their second tournament win! I will definitely be taking a look at their team this coming week to see if I missed any obvious strategies. I also realized we can see final stats for our players on the website!

I was nowhere near the top for batting, but I’ll do better next time. Once again the tournament was a LOT of fun and I’m excited about next week.

That’s all for now! Thanks for reading! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe if you want more Moonshot Baseball posts!
