For any readers who stumble across this post accidentally, the SNES Shadowrun Reboot is a fan made mod using the Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director’s Cut engine. The goal of this mod was to remake and improve on the original SNES Shadowrun game. The module is fully playable, though there are some minor bugs and performance issues.

You can learn more about us at our Facebook page, our steam page, or download the mod (provided you have a DRM free version of Dragonfall), from Nexus

Over the course of this project, we have fixed a lot of bugs. Many of these were reported by the community and often they are hard to reproduce. That means our fixes are frequently theoretical and unverified.

As eager as I am to remove the beta tag from this project, I want to do one more very thorough round of testing. I could play through the mod myself a dozen times, but even if I did I’m sure our players would do things I didn’t think of. It’s also possible I would overlook issues due to being overly familiar with the module.

To that end, I want to enlist you, our loyal fans (and anyone else who stumbles over this project), to help us test. Since I don’t expect you to do this for free, I decided to make a challenge of it. Welcome to the SNES Shadowrun Reboot Speed Run Challenge!

The rules are fairly straightforward:

  • Using the “SPEED RUN CHALLENGE BUILD” version of the module, record your progress as you play through the module as fast as you can. (Steam Link) (Nexus Link)
  • Use any character build you like. Be warned that hacking, rigging, and magic options will be very limited in the beginning of the game.
  • Share your recordings with us through facebook, steam, or on this post in order to win steam game keys.
  • Tell us how long it took you to complete the mod and how much Karma you had at the end.
  • This contest ends when we get FIVE valid entries.
  • Prizes are based on when you submit your final recording, not on how long your play through took.

The goal of this contest is not to advertise, though we certainly won’t object to you live streaming (as long as it’s recorded for future viewing) or publicly posting let’s plays. We simply want to see how you play the game and what issues you face. This way we can better fix them. If you are uncomfortable sharing publicly, you are welcome to privately share the videos with us instead. As long as we can access them for the foreseeable future, or save them locally, it’s fine.

We know the mod is fairly long, and odds are most people won’t finish it in a single sitting. We also know recording the whole thing in one video will make it unwieldy. Please break your videos down into the following chunks.

  • From the opening animation until you arrive in the car yards.
  • From the car yards until you exit the monorail Downtown
  • From Downtown until you report to Dog that you killed the Rat Shaman.
  • Dark Blade and Bremerton
  • Drake Tower
  • Drake Volcano
  • Aneki until the end of the credits.

You won’t be penalized if you break them down even further, this is simply the bare minimum to allow us to properly view and address any issues faced.

We also know that the mod is grind heavy. You are welcome to use the secret room to gain XP and nuyen, but you shouldn’t use it to advance the story. If you do use it, make sure it’s included in the recording. As for grinding, as long as you don’t encounter any issues while grinding you are welcome to fast forward or cut that section of the recording. Just tell us approximately how much time you spent and how much Karma/Nuyen you farmed.

Lastly we have a few known issues you are likely to encounter.

  • When you transfer between regions Downtown the camera loses focus. Simply click on the compass pointer in the top left of the screen to refocus on your party.
  • Drake Volcano and Aneki Tower (especially the final boss) tend to freeze on lower end computers. Save often.
  • The Secret Room has been known to cause issue with the progress tracking variables in the mod when used to advance the plot.

Prizes will come from my unused humble bundle keys. Like many of you I’ve collected a lot over the years so hopefully there will be some appealing games in there.

The first FIVE people to submit a full set of playthrough videos will get to choose from my game list. Its long so I posted it to our old wiki, let me know if you have any issues viewing it.

If you have any questions feel free to ask here, on our facebook page, or in steam. You can submit your videos to any of those places as well.

Good luck and have fun!
